Art & Earth

Institution: Wofford College

Instructor: Kaye Savage

Description: The fine arts are intimately tied to the natural world by virtue of the materials used, and many artistic works explicitly address relationships between people and nature. This course will explore both topics. Students will learn about geological and biological origins of art materials through lecture, experimentation, field experiences, and research presentations. Perceptions of nature will be addressed through review of artistic works. Students will present an artistic work of their own in a public forum, together with information about materials, in relation to a particular geographic region. About 1/4 of the course addresses use of art as environmental activism.
